March’s Seasonal Star: Cauliflower
Dear Aprendizes Community,
At Aprendizes, we are deeply committed to the education of global citizens. As a school with a Nordic approach, we firmly believe in democratic education as an essential pillar in shaping the future. Our role extends beyond providing academic knowledge; we foster critical thinking, active participation, and engagement in societal issues.
A question that often arises in education is whether schools should take a stand on political matters. Our response is a resounding yes. Schools should not be politically neutral if neutrality means disengagement. Democracy only thrives when people actively participate, yet we see an increasing number of individuals—especially young people—disengaging from political discussions. It is our responsibility to equip our students with the tools to navigate, debate, and shape the world they will inherit.
Therefore, at Aprendizes, we teach our students to discuss, debate, negotiate, mediate, advocate, lobby, mobilize, organize, demonstrate, campaign, and create awareness. We are immensely proud of our Middle School students, who, just before the break, organized a demonstration against racism. Others are facilitating debates on this issue. Their initiative exemplifies the kind of active citizenship we seek to nurture. Similarly, our 12th-grade English Language students produced insightful videos exploring how teenagers use inclusive and exclusive language in negotiating power and as a part of their identity formation. We eagerly anticipate their next steps in raising awareness among our Middle School students.
Our commitment to fostering dialogue and critical thought is also evident in the upcoming event we are hosting: a community-wide discussion on the Geopolitics of the World in the Era of Trump. Such discussions are vital for developing informed and engaged global citizens.
Moreover, we proudly stand by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. Promoting peaceful and inclusive societies, ensuring access to justice, and building accountable and inclusive institutions are at the heart of our mission. This does not mean endorsing specific political parties, but rather taking a clear stance on ethical and democratic principles. Our commitment is to continuously advocate for inclusive democratic practices that uphold human dignity and rights.
In this spirit, and in celebration of March 8 — the International Women's Day—I want to take a moment to recognize the incredible women in our community and beyond. We must strive for greater female representation in global leadership. The world would look significantly different, I believe, if we had more female leaders—leaders who emphasize service over the mere execution of power. I am particularly proud that one of our female graduating students has been accepted to study Political Science at various universities. Her journey is a testament to the change we seek to inspire.
At Aprendizes, we are committed to ensuring that the next generation is ready to lead with integrity, courage, and awareness. Education is the foundation for a better, more just world, and we are here to play our part.
With pride and determination,
Rikke
Principal, Aprendizes
PRESCHOOL: “Salteadores” turn stories into creativity
The preschoolers from Salteadores classroom explored creativity through Circle by Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen.
Inspired by the story’s mystery, they imagined what lay in the darkness, expressing their ideas through drawing and modeling.
This interactive activity encouraged abstract thinking, problem-solving, and artistic expression, making learning engaging and meaningful.
PRIMARY: Q & U tie the knot!
The 1st C class had a wedding to remember! Teacher Catarina and Assistant Cláudia became Q and U, the inseparable duo in words.
Dressed up, students cheered the fun ceremony—complete with music, decorations, and even a real cake!
Laughter, learning, and magic filled the day as they discovered why Q and U are always together in the portuguese language!
MIDDLE: Grade 5 students explore air resistance with creative parachute challenge
Grade 5 students recently explored friction and air resistance through a parachute challenge.
They designed parachutes with different surface areas, testing which hit the ground first. Using plastic bags and Playmobil figures, they measured, timed, and recorded results.
This hands-on experiment promoted teamwork, critical thinking, and helped students understand air resistance through creative, real-world application of scientific concepts.
SECONDARY: 9th graders unlock the power of levers
In an exciting hands-on physics experiment, 9th-grade students explored the principles of levers and mass distribution.
They measured the mass of an object on a balanced lever, applying theoretical knowledge to real-world problem-solving. Through calculations and teamwork, they reinforced their understanding of equilibrium, torque, and mechanical advantage.
The experiment sparked curiosity and showed that physics is both practical and fun!

Cauliflower is a nutritious and versatile vegetable, in peak season during March. Rich in vitamins C and K, fiber, and antioxidants, it supports immunity and digestion.
Its mild taste and soft texture make it a favorite among children, easily blending into mashed dishes, rice alternatives, or even snacks like cauliflower tots.
A great substitute for heavier carbs, it’s a perfect ingredient for healthy meals.
