Strengthening our commitment to Internet Safety

Dear Parents and Students,

As we navigate the digital age, internet safety requires a shared effort between home and school. Research, including Jonathan Haidt’s work, underscores the importance of open, ongoing conversations about children’s online activity—when, what, and how long they’re online.

At school, firewalls block inappropriate content, but students can bypass these when using improperly their hotspot. Students must keep their phones inside their locker in flight mode. We remind you that our school is a No Mobiles Phone School. Digital safety isn’t just a school responsibility; parents play a crucial role in setting boundaries and guiding online habits.

A key concern is the social impact of early smartphone and social media use. When some students access certain apps before others, it can lead to exclusion. Excessive social media use is also linked to anxiety and low self-esteem, particularly in girls. I encourage parents of primary and middle school students to collaborate on shared agreements about digital access to foster an inclusive, balanced environment.

Another pressing issue is online language. Some students have shown me alarming messages filled with offensive language. While we address this in SER classes and assemblies, parental involvement is essential. Ask yourself: Do you know what your child is doing online? Open discussions about respectful communication are vital.

Research shows a paradox: parents often overprotect in the real world yet underprotect online. We must flip this—allowing real-world exploration while safeguarding the digital space. Our newly established Online Safety Committee will help drive this effort, and I look forward to working together to prioritize student well-being.

Finally, we must lead by example. The way we use our phones influences our children’s habits. A simple reminder: when picking up your child, be present. It’s the most important meeting of your day.

Thank you for your commitment to this critical issue.

Best regards,
Rikke
Principal, Aprendizes

PRESCHOOL: Little artists, big impact!

During Humanities Week, our preschoolers amazed everyone with their art exhibition. Their creative journey spanned from Fauvism’s bold colors to the geometric precision of Cubism.

Mondrian’s abstract grids stood out, showcasing their structure and balance.

The highlight? A depiction of the school garden in Monet’s impressionist style. This display proved that artistic expression knows no age—just imagination and passion!

PRIMARY: First graders take learning outside!

First graders from three classes swapped their classrooms for the great outdoors! Using the school’s green spaces, they reviewed even and odd numbers through a fun, interactive challenge—sorting numbered cards from 0 to 100 into even and odd piles.

Working in teams, they applied their knowledge while strengthening cooperation and bilingual communication skills. The fresh air and hands-on activity made math an adventure, proving that learning goes beyond four walls!

MIDDLE: Aprendizes students shine at OPOMUN Conference

From February 12-14, fourteen middle school students from Aprendizes participated in the OPOMUN conference in Porto, joining schools from across Europe and beyond.

The Model United Nations (MUN) event allowed them to step into the role of diplomats, debating global issues, negotiating solutions, and drafting resolutions. At OPOMUN, the students honed their public speaking, diplomacy skills, and formed lasting bonds with peers and teachers—an enriching experience!

SECONDARY: Learning in the Wild

On February 7, our 9th and 10th graders took learning beyond the classroom with an exciting trip to Tapada de Mafra. They explored wildlife trails, observed deer and wild boars, and watched a breathtaking falconry show.

Engaging workshops taught them about biodiversity and conservation. This day proved that education happens everywhere—especially in nature.

Also the teachers couldn’t hide their excitement for this wild adventure!

UNFORGETTABLE FIELD TRIPS

February 7th was a day filled with excitement, discovery, and hands-on learning! Students explored incredible places, engaged with history, science, and nature, and made unforgettable memories.

7th Grade – Museu da Eletricidade & Hippo Trip

Apart from these study trips, congratulations to our Senior Boys' team for winning the LASA 2024 Basketball Tournament! Our other teams also performed excellently, placing in the top four across all categories.

HUMANITIES WEEK

Humanities Week, held from February 10th-14th, celebrated the impact of Social Science in understanding our world. Students showcased their research and creativity through activities in History, Geography, Sociology, Psychology, International History, Business Studies, and Global Perspectives.

The event provided a valuable opportunity for students to apply social science methodologies and collaborate in real-world contexts, highlighting their dedication throughout the week.

February SEASONAL STAR: Tangerine

The Mediterranean climate enhances the sweet flavor and juiciness of citrus fruits, and for many Portuguese, the tangerine is synonymous with childhood memories and family moments. It’s common to see them on Christmas tables or served as a healthy snack.

The characteristic aroma of the peel is also associated with winter, filling the air with a comforting citrus scent. This fruit is perfect for natural juices, desserts, meat sauces, fresh salads, and even jams!

Our tangerines come from the S. Sivestre Orchard.
