Celebrating Book Week | A Celebrar a Semana do Livro

Last week, Aprendizes celebrated Book Week, a joyful tribute to reading, storytelling, and the power of books. Across the entire school community—from Preschool to Secondary—students and staff took part in a wide range of activities designed to inspire curiosity, creativity, and a love of literature.

Throughout the week, the school was filled with student-created displays of favourite books, where learners proudly shared the stories that have inspired them. Our 10th grade English students also organised a thought-provoking Banned Books Exhibition, encouraging visitors to reflect on freedom of expression and the history of challenged literature.

Creativity was at the heart of the celebrations with a creative writing contest titled “The Day That Everything Changed.” Students from different year groups submitted imaginative stories exploring turning points, surprises, and moments that transform lives.

Reading also brought students together across age groups through cross-class reading activities, where older and younger students shared stories and the joy of reading with one another.

We were delighted to welcome storyteller Rodolfo Castro, whose engaging sessions captivated audiences of all ages and reminded us of the magic of oral storytelling.

Theatre also played an important role in the week’s celebrations. Calliope Theatre performed stage adaptations of Snow White and The Taming of the Shrew, bringing classic stories to life for our students. In addition, 6th grade students took the stage to perform excerpts from Othello, showcasing their confidence and enthusiasm for Shakespeare.

Another highlight was a visit from Portuguese author Pedro Leitão, who met with students to talk about his work, creativity, and the writing process.

Our 9th grade English students explored literature through film by watching the classic adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird, complementing their classroom study of the novel.

Throughout the week, students and families could also browse and discover new titles at our Book Fair, adding even more excitement for young readers.

To close the celebrations, the entire school community came together for a unique and unforgettable event: a Whole-School Reading Rave. Students and staff brought cushions, blankets, and their favourite books, settling in for a peaceful reading session accompanied by live music performances and a few artistic surprises along the way.

Book Week at Aprendizes was a wonderful reminder that reading connects us, sparks imagination, and opens doors to new worlds. We look forward to many more stories and celebrations of reading in the future.

Na semana passada, os Aprendizes celebraram a Semana do Livro, uma homenagem à leitura, à narrativa e ao poder dos livros. Toda a comunidade escolar — desde o Pré-Escolar até ao Ensino Secundário — participou numa grande variedade de atividades pensadas para inspirar curiosidade, criatividade e o gosto pela literatura.

Ao longo da semana, a escola encheu-se de exposições criadas pelos alunos com os seus livros favoritos, onde partilharam as histórias que mais os marcaram. Os alunos de Inglês do 10.º ano organizaram também uma Exposição de Livros Proibidos, convidando a comunidade escolar a refletir sobre a liberdade de expressão e a história de obras literárias que foram desafiadas ou censuradas.

A criatividade esteve no centro das celebrações com o concurso de escrita criativa “The Day That Everything Changed” (“O Dia em que Tudo Mudou”), no qual alunos de diferentes anos apresentaram histórias imaginativas sobre momentos de mudança, surpresa e transformação.

A leitura também aproximou alunos de diferentes idades através de atividades de leitura entre turmas, nas quais alunos mais velhos e mais novos partilharam histórias e o prazer de ler.

Tivemos ainda o privilégio de receber o contador de histórias Rodolfo Castro, cujas sessões envolventes encantaram alunos de todas as idades e recordaram a magia da tradição oral.

O teatro também teve um lugar de destaque. A companhia Calliope Theatre apresentou adaptações teatrais de Snow White e The Taming of the Shrew, trazendo histórias clássicas ao palco. Além disso, os alunos do 6.º ano apresentaram excertos de Othello, demonstrando grande entusiasmo e confiança ao interpretar Shakespeare.

Outro momento especial foi a visita do autor português Pedro Leitão, que conversou com os alunos sobre o seu trabalho, a criatividade e o processo de escrita.

Durante toda a semana, alunos e famílias puderam também descobrir novos livros na nossa Feira do Livro, acrescentando ainda mais entusiasmo à celebração da leitura.

Para encerrar a semana, toda a comunidade escolar reuniu-se num evento muito especial: um Reading Rave para toda a escola. Alunos e colaboradores trouxeram almofadas, mantas e os seus livros preferidos para desfrutar de um momento tranquilo de leitura ao som de música ao vivo e algumas surpresas artísticas.

A Semana do Livro nos Aprendizes foi um belo lembrete de que a leitura nos liga, desperta a imaginação e abre portas para novos mundos.
