A Week to Celebrate Africa | Uma Semana para Celebrar África
This week, Aprendizes celebrated Africa Week with a rich and inspiring programme of activities dedicated to African cultures, arts, literature, music and cinema. Throughout the week, students, teachers and guests came together to celebrate the diversity and creativity of the African continent through moments of learning, reflection and artistic expression.
The celebrations began with the opening of an informational mural about African cinema at the school entrance, inviting the whole school community to discover important films, directors and stories from across Africa.
One of the highlights of the week was the open class led by Margarida Malveiro, an undergraduate student at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra, entitled “Deconstructing the Single Story: Identity and Voice in Americanah.” The session encouraged students to reflect on stereotypes, identity and representation through literature.
Students also participated in a Workshop on African Masks with arts teacher Maria Carvalho, exploring the symbolism, creativity and cultural significance of traditional African masks through hands-on artistic work.
Cinema also had a special place during the week, with a talk by film director João Viana followed by a screening of his film A batalha de Tabatô. This was an important opportunity for students to engage with African cinema and discuss storytelling, memory and culture.
Music brought even more energy to the celebration through several musical moments with João Paulo Sousa, creating a vibrant atmosphere throughout the school.
Another important moment was the oral presentation of projects on African literatures by student groups participating in the project “Pontes literárias” in collaboration with students from the University of Coimbra. These presentations highlighted the students’ research, creativity and intercultural dialogue.
The week also included a book fair organized by Indie Not a Bookshop, offering students and teachers the opportunity to discover books connected to African literature, culture and history.
Our 7th grade English as a Second Language students also shared their creativity by reading stories about Africa that they had written for Primary School students. In addition, an exhibition of the books created by the 7th grade students was displayed during the week.
Africa Week was a meaningful celebration of culture, diversity and learning, providing the entire school community with enriching experiences and new perspectives.
Esta semana, os Aprendizes celebrou a Semana de África com um programa rico e inspirador de atividades dedicadas às culturas, artes, literaturas, música e cinema africanos. Ao longo da semana, alunos, professores e convidados reuniram-se para celebrar a diversidade e a criatividade do continente africano através de momentos de aprendizagem, reflexão e expressão artística.
As celebrações começaram com a inauguração de um mural informativo sobre o cinema africano, na entrada da escola, convidando toda a comunidade escolar a descobrir filmes, realizadores e histórias importantes de vários países africanos.
Um dos momentos de destaque da semana foi a aula aberta dinamizada por Margarida Malveiro, estudante da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra, intitulada “Deconstructing the Single Story: Identity and Voice in Americanah”. A sessão incentivou os alunos a refletirem sobre estereótipos, identidade e representação através da literatura.
Os alunos participaram também num Workshop de Máscaras Africanas com a professora de Artes Maria Carvalho, explorando o simbolismo, a criatividade e o significado cultural das máscaras tradicionais africanas através de atividades artísticas práticas.
O cinema teve igualmente um lugar especial durante a semana, com uma conversa com o realizador João Viana, seguida da exibição do filme A batalha de Tabatô. Este momento proporcionou aos alunos uma importante oportunidade de contacto com o cinema africano e de reflexão sobre narrativa, memória e cultura.
A música trouxe ainda mais energia à celebração através de vários momentos musicais com João Paulo Sousa, criando um ambiente vibrante em toda a escola.
Outro momento importante foi a apresentação oral de projetos sobre literaturas africanas por grupos de alunos participantes no projeto “Pontes literárias”, em colaboração com estudantes da Universidade de Coimbra. Estas apresentações destacaram o trabalho de investigação, a criatividade e o diálogo intercultural desenvolvidos pelos alunos.
A semana incluiu também uma feira do livro organizada pela Indie Not a Bookshop, oferecendo a alunos e professores a oportunidade de descobrir livros relacionados com a literatura, cultura e história africanas.
Os alunos do 7.º ano de Inglês Língua Estrangeira partilharam igualmente a sua criatividade ao ler histórias sobre África, por eles criadas, aos alunos do 1.º ciclo. Além disso, esteve patente uma exposição dos livros produzidos pelos alunos do 7.º ano.
A Semana de África foi uma celebração significativa da cultura, da diversidade e da aprendizagem, proporcionando a toda a comunidade escolar experiências enriquecedoras e novas perspetivas.
