Exploring Gender and Education in Literature | Explorar o Género e a Educação na Literatura
The Grade 11 students have been working on a focused study of a selection of short stories in preparation for their AS English Literature examination. As part of this unit, they have closely analysed and discussed the ways in which themes of gender and education are represented within each text and how these themes reflect the societies in which the stories are set.
The short stories studied include:
The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
The Son’s Veto by Thomas Hardy
The Door in the Wall by H. G. Wells
An Englishman’s Home by Evelyn Waugh
The Prison by Bernard Malamud
Through these works, students have explored how social expectations, gender roles, and access to education shape individuals’ lives and influence their choices. They have examined how characters respond to the limitations imposed by their societies, as well as how writers use narrative and symbolism to critique these constraints.
This unit has encouraged students to think critically about the relationship between literature and society, while also developing their analytical and essay-writing skills in preparation for their AS examinations.
The Yellow Wallpaper de Charlotte Perkins Gilman
The Son’s Veto de Thomas Hardy
The Door in the Wall de H. G. Wells
An Englishman’s Home de Evelyn Waugh
The Prison de Bernard Malamud
