Building Literary Bridges at the University of Coimbra | Construir Pontes Literárias na Universidade de Coimbra

A few weeks ago, a group of 9th-grade students and another group of 11th-grade students enrolled in Portuguese First Language visited the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra to present research and literary analysis projects on African literatures, developed under the supervision of their teacher, Ana T. Rocha.

The session, entitled “Literary Bridges: Knowledge in Dialogue between Secondary School and University Students”, took place at FLUC and brought together secondary school and university students in an enriching academic exchange. The presentations were delivered within the context of an undergraduate class on African Literatures, creating an opportunity for dialogue between different levels of education and encouraging students to share their perspectives and interpretations of literary texts.

This initiative aimed to strengthen the connection between secondary and higher education while highlighting the quality and depth of the students’ work. It also encouraged critical thinking, academic curiosity, and meaningful engagement with African literary traditions. The Faculty of Arts and Humanities promoted the event within the academic community, helping to give greater visibility to the students’ achievements and to the collaborative spirit of the project.

Before returning home, the students still had some time to stroll through the city centre and around the campus of Coimbra, enjoying the atmosphere and cultural richness of one of Portugal’s most iconic university cities.

Há algumas semanas, um grupo de alunos do 9.º ano e outro grupo de alunos do 11.º ano, inscritos na disciplina de Português (Língua Materna), visitaram a Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra para apresentar projetos de investigação e análise literária sobre literaturas africanas, desenvolvidos sob a orientação da professora Ana T. Rocha.

A sessão, intitulada “Pontes Literárias: o Conhecimento em Diálogo entre Estudantes do Ensino Secundário e Universitário”, decorreu na FLUC e promoveu um enriquecedor intercâmbio académico entre alunos do ensino secundário e do ensino superior. As apresentações tiveram lugar no âmbito de uma aula da licenciatura em Literaturas Africanas, criando um espaço de diálogo entre diferentes níveis de ensino e incentivando os alunos a partilharem as suas perspetivas e interpretações dos textos literários.

Esta iniciativa teve como objetivo reforçar a ligação entre o ensino secundário e o ensino superior, ao mesmo tempo que destacou a qualidade e a profundidade do trabalho desenvolvido pelos alunos. Além disso, promoveu o pensamento crítico, a curiosidade académica e um envolvimento mais significativo com as tradições literárias africanas. A Faculdade de Letras divulgou igualmente o evento junto da comunidade académica, contribuindo para dar maior visibilidade ao trabalho dos estudantes e ao espírito colaborativo do projeto.

Antes do regresso, os alunos ainda tiveram tempo para passear pelo centro da cidade e pela zona universitária de Coimbra, desfrutando do ambiente e da riqueza cultural de uma das mais emblemáticas cidades universitárias de Portugal.
